Zurich Seville City Marathon: The city as target
Abstract
During a period of time with a public sector under severe budgetary limitations, the traditional way of managing the Marathon of Seville, the flagship event of the IMD (Seville Sports Institute), was questioned. This situation clearly put in danger its future continuity, after twenty-eight editions. One of the first challenges was to change the management model of the Marathon of Seville to adapt it to the new requirements of both: the city and the IMD. The result makes clear the relationship between the management model and the management of economic and financial resources in terms of efficiency (cause/effect). The management model and working method adopted by the Municipal Institute of Sports of the Seville City Council during the period 2011-2014: EQFM model of European excellence, and management by processes, pervades all corners of the organization (360 degree approach). This approach drove to a revision of its structure, services catalogue and management model in terms of efficiency and sustainability. The revision was conducted from the most simple to the most complex. The working method ‘continuous improvement based on the management of processes’, has been the driving force behind this changing process, whose greatest virtue has been its transversality
