The competitive balance in the “First Division” of the football league in Spain

Carlos Mon-Friera, Plácido Rodríguez-Guerrero

Abstract

This project tests the competitive balance hypothesis using data from the First Division of the Spanish Football League, known as Liga BBVA. For that purpose, a database was built including the number of games played, and the number of points scored by all teams participating in each of the 1st Division season from 1928-1929 until 2014-2015. Such period comprises the whole history of 1st Division Spanish League. A series of competitive balance indicators have then been used in order to analyse the variation in the degree of evenness in the competition throughout the study seasons. The causes leading to the current situation of the Liga BBVA and its evolution in the next few years are discussed in view of the study outcomes
